Course information

In BTEC Applied Law, students gain a practical understanding of how the legal system works. In Unit 1 they explore civil law, primarily claims in negligence and learning how disputes are resolved through courts and remedies. Unit 2 introduces criminal law and the wider legal system, covering how laws are made, enforced, and the roles of judges, magistrates, solicitors and barristers and exploring the key elements of crime and looking at non-fatal offences. Unit 3 focusses on applying the law to real life scenarios, where students analyse criminal offences such as fatal offences, property offences and defences. The final unit chosen will look at tort law in more depth including liability for personal injury, claims against occupiers of land and claims against employers for the negligent actions of their employees.

2 Years.

In the classroom, students will engage in classroom discussions and debates, research led activities, presentations, problem solving tasks such as legal problem scenarios and role-play activities. Outside of the classroom there will be further opportunities to develop legal knowledge and understanding with study plus activities set by the teacher, such as listening to podcasts, watching documentaries and reading about the latest legal judgements and breaking news. If you enjoy independent research and intellectual curiosity, this course is for you.

Students will sit a combination of external assessments (Units 1 and 3) and internally assessed assignments focussing on vocational tasks (Units 2 and the optional unit on tort law). This course is for learners who prefer a more vocational driven assignment based approach instead of solely exams.
